Majestic Freakiness

Tampa based Yo Majesty are as much known for their mix of Christian ideals and lesbian sexuality as they are for their mix of electro and crunk musical styles. Fortunately, their tunes have just the right mix of sass and groove to make the mix of your ears and your booty not care about anything else but listening and dancing! Seeing as how today is in fact Halloween, their recently released tune "Freaks Come Out" seems like an appropriate post. Plus, it's just a damn cool tune for any day!

The Speaking Apostle

Last night's Gogol Bordello concert was nothing short of phenomenal, as expected! A little bit less expected was how amazing the opening act, Apostle of Hustle, were. Led by Andrew Whiteman on guitar, vocals, sampler, etc..., they've been making their blend of brazilian/punk/indie music in various permutations since 2001. Last night it was just Whiteman and drummer Dean Stone, whom I will have to tell you is a freakishly talented force of nature on the skins. Between the two of them, they were able to stir up nearly as much excitement as the 9 or 10 piece headliner! Eats Darkness is the name of the album they released earlier this year, and here's the tune "Eazy Speaks" from it, for your listening pleasure!

I And Love And The Avett Brothers

Certain artists are able to define, with music, just what America is in a way that simple language cannot. Artists like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and The Avett Brothers. If you're not yet familiar with the latter, don't worry, you will be. Their first major-label album was released about a month ago, and was produced by none other than Rick Rubin. Their talent is such that they've been hand-chosen as the opening act for the likes of Widespread Panic and the Dave Matthews Band. The brothers are Scott and Seth, and they are joined by bassist Bob Crawford and more recent recruit, cellist Joe Kwon. Their music has been tagged with terms like "indie roots" and "grunge-grass," but you kind of have to hear it to understand what all it encompasses. Certainly there's the country and bluegrass influences, and folk and rock 'n' roll too. There's the spirit of punk in an early R.E.M. kind of way in many of their tunes as well. In any case, just let the music describe itself to you... Here's the new album's title track "I And Love And You," a tune of magnificence, beauty and regret...

Crooked Fang

You have to have been hiding under a boulder the size of Texas to have not heard about the latest, and possibly greatest, "supergroup" ever, Them Crooked Vultures. To think that the sum of it's parts could be greater than it's simple mathematical equation has never seemed a more plausible scenario. You start with one of the greatest drummers of one of the greatest bands of all time, Nirvana's Dave Grohl. Then you throw in someone who virtually defines the phrase "rock royalty," Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. Add to that one of the most highly esteemed and successful singer/guitarists of the past decade (or two), Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme. Ok, cliche as it may be, I have to use the phrase, "You do the math!" Impossible as it seems, it appears that this band is actually going to meet those unbelievably high expectations. Their debut self-titled album is scheduled to drop in a few weeks, and the first single "New Fang" will be released next week as a free download. But guess what, bitches? The Three Queens have got it for your sexy ass already! The tune is a madly driving southern-style boogie masterpiece, and here it is...

Cornell Un-Screamed

Scream, the boldly adventurous yet tragically flawed collaborative project between Chris Cornell and Timbaland, was released to almost unanimous scathing reviews earlier this year. Even Cornell friend Trent Reznor publically dragged Chris' name through the mud about it via Twitter. Although a few of the songs lent themselves to excellent remixes (Digital Dog's "Long Gone" and L.A. Riots "Part of Me" particularly), the rest of the album has pretty much sunk like a concrete-shoe wearing dead hooker in a Louisiana swamp. Until now, that is. Jordan Zadorozny (of Canadian band Blinker The Star) was brought in to see what he could do with the tracks, and the first fruit of that labor, "Never Far Away" reminds us of the Cornell we know and love again. The newly produced track still has a slight electronic edge, the original majestic melody, and Chris' soaring vocals, of course. (Sorry to post a 128kbs file, but it was the best I could do at the moment and I promise you don't want to wait to hear it!)

Six Shooter

Kill is the recently released sixth album by Detroit's Electric Six, and it is somewhat of a return to the sound and feel of their debut LP Fire. Not that they ever strayed that far from it, mind you, it's just that Kill has that distinct party vibe going that got you to notice them in the first place. The thing that has always held the humor and the rock 'n' roll together so delectably with this band is THE BOOGIE, and this first single "Body Shot" has that in abundance! The drums and guitars are massive, and there's a smokin' reggae coda at the end! Do not attempt to stay still while listening!

Just A Mandarino Monday

Bill's recently made some really cool musical discoveries, so today's posts come courtesy of him!

First off is Public Radio, a band out of Charlotte, North Carolina who've recently released their debut EP entitled Sweetchild. Led by singer/songwriter Mark Mathis, this four-piece manages to combine emo, electronic and good old rock 'n' roll influences into one compelling and potent mixture. They're being heavily compared to Death Cab For Cutie, but there's a certain aggressiveness to Public Radio that adds a bolder dimension to the songs. "17 Is Too Young," is about a young man having to go to war but wishing he was able to finish growing up normally without having to leave his girlfriend and go kill people. But don't expect to hear misery rock, the tune is melodic, anthemic and totally rocking!

Playing a raucous version of pub rock that you can already tell will be reaching the backs of stadiums in the near future are Bristol, England's The Chemists. They're releasing their debut album The Theories of Dr. Lovelock in early November, and have preceded it with the single "Milk and Honey," which we're totally excited to share with you here. "You've got it all, why would you want more?" wails singer Johnny Benn, while the band pounds along behind him, wearing their Pixies and Queens of the Stone Age influences proudly on their madly strumming and drumming sleeves. This is one band that needs to be heard LOUD!!!

New Dynamo

From the ashes of New Order's 2007 split rises Bad Lieutenant, with their debut Never Cry Another Tear. The band is made up of N.O. founding members vocalist/guitarist Bernard Sumner and drummer Stephen Morris, who are joined by recent N.O. touring guitarist Phil Cunningham, ex-Blur bassist Alex James and guitarist Jake Evans. Their sound distances itself from New Order's danciness and heads in a more rock direction with an emphasis on guitars. "Dynamo" takes the classic Who "Won't Get Fooled Again" synth sample and throws it to the back of the mix where it sounds almost church-organ-ish, and it fits there quite nicely. The original elements of the song recall the best parts of U2 and Snow Patrol. Nicely done!

Glimmers of Hope

The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi is the title of the debut album by Belgian disco enthusiasts The Glimmers. Although they've been making noise for a number of years, this is their first true album of original music. They have enlisted some notable names, such as Princess Superstar and Prins Thomas, to add to the studio magic, and it works well. Although this LCD Soundsystem-esque remake of Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" has been floating around the internet for awhile, it seems like the obvious choice to post, it's just so much fun!

That Same Fagget!

We got some lesbos again, this time a Danish duo calling themselves Fagget Fairys, thereby covering ALL the important homosexual demographics. Smart, right? Anyway, they make some pretty sick beats and tracks, as it turns out, so who cares about the details? Brooklyn-based producer/DJ AC Slater has added his tough dancefloor thrills with just the right amount of wonkiness and Marine Corps brass to "Samo Ti," and there you have a completely undeniable booty-shaker, so TURN IT UP!!

Purple Fu

Super hot Brooklyn beatmaker Chew Fu and Australian singer Steve Clisby have teamed up for a fantastic cover of Prince's "Purple Rain." Clisby stays true to the original melody, but it's the sound of his voice that re-energizes the track you've heard so many times before. Smooth and sultry, like a cross between Isaac Hayes and Tom Jones, his voice is a remarkable instrument. For his part, Chew Fu has completely thrown out the old formula and re-invented the song with some jazzy piano, a popping Bootsy-worthy bassline and a nice and tight drum track. Now come lay down in the funk, chillrens!
