Majestic Freakiness

Tampa based Yo Majesty are as much known for their mix of Christian ideals and lesbian sexuality as they are for their mix of electro and crunk musical styles. Fortunately, their tunes have just the right mix of sass and groove to make the mix of your ears and your booty not care about anything else but listening and dancing! Seeing as how today is in fact Halloween, their recently released tune "Freaks Come Out" seems like an appropriate post. Plus, it's just a damn cool tune for any day!

And the also-Halloween-appropriate video is well worth watching too!
The Speaking Apostle

Last night's Gogol Bordello concert was nothing short of phenomenal, as expected! A little bit less expected was how amazing the opening act, Apostle of Hustle, were. Led by Andrew Whiteman on guitar, vocals, sampler, etc..., they've been making their blend of brazilian/punk/indie music in various permutations since 2001. Last night it was just Whiteman and drummer Dean Stone, whom I will have to tell you is a freakishly talented force of nature on the skins. Between the two of them, they were able to stir up nearly as much excitement as the 9 or 10 piece headliner! Eats Darkness is the name of the album they released earlier this year, and here's the tune "Eazy Speaks" from it, for your listening pleasure!

I And Love And The Avett Brothers

Certain artists are able to define, with music, just what America is in a way that simple language cannot. Artists like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and The Avett Brothers. If you're not yet familiar with the latter, don't worry, you will be. Their first major-label album was released about a month ago, and was produced by none other than Rick Rubin. Their talent is such that they've been hand-chosen as the opening act for the likes of Widespread Panic and the Dave Matthews Band. The brothers are Scott and Seth, and they are joined by bassist Bob Crawford and more recent recruit, cellist Joe Kwon. Their music has been tagged with terms like "indie roots" and "grunge-grass," but you kind of have to hear it to understand what all it encompasses. Certainly there's the country and bluegrass influences, and folk and rock 'n' roll too. There's the spirit of punk in an early R.E.M. kind of way in many of their tunes as well. In any case, just let the music describe itself to you... Here's the new album's title track "I And Love And You," a tune of magnificence, beauty and regret...
And to give you a taste of another side of the Brothers, here's the Hootenanny-style track "Talk On Indolence" from their 2006 album Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions...

Crooked Fang
You have to have been hiding under a boulder the size of Texas to have not heard about the latest, and possibly greatest, "supergroup" ever, Them Crooked Vultures. To think that the sum of it's parts could be greater than it's simple mathematical equation has never seemed a more plausible scenario. You start with one of the greatest drummers of one of the greatest bands of all time, Nirvana's Dave Grohl. Then you throw in someone who virtually defines the phrase "rock royalty," Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. Add to that one of the most highly esteemed and successful singer/guitarists of the past decade (or two), Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme. Ok, cliche as it may be, I have to use the phrase, "You do the math!" Impossible as it seems, it appears that this band is actually going to meet those unbelievably high expectations. Their debut self-titled album is scheduled to drop in a few weeks, and the first single "New Fang" will be released next week as a free download. But guess what, bitches? The Three Queens have got it for your sexy ass already! The tune is a madly driving southern-style boogie masterpiece, and here it is...http://www.zshare.net/audio/6758727064dcd1b8/

Cornell Un-Screamed
Scream, the boldly adventurous yet tragically flawed collaborative project between Chris Cornell and Timbaland, was released to almost unanimous scathing reviews earlier this year. Even Cornell friend Trent Reznor publically dragged Chris' name through the mud about it via Twitter. Although a few of the songs lent themselves to excellent remixes (Digital Dog's "Long Gone" and L.A. Riots "Part of Me" particularly), the rest of the album has pretty much sunk like a concrete-shoe wearing dead hooker in a Louisiana swamp. Until now, that is. Jordan Zadorozny (of Canadian band Blinker The Star) was brought in to see what he could do with the tracks, and the first fruit of that labor, "Never Far Away" reminds us of the Cornell we know and love again. The newly produced track still has a slight electronic edge, the original majestic melody, and Chris' soaring vocals, of course. (Sorry to post a 128kbs file, but it was the best I could do at the moment and I promise you don't want to wait to hear it!)http://www.zshare.net/audio/67578242c4b7b5af/
Six Shooter

Kill is the recently released sixth album by Detroit's Electric Six, and it is somewhat of a return to the sound and feel of their debut LP Fire. Not that they ever strayed that far from it, mind you, it's just that Kill has that distinct party vibe going that got you to notice them in the first place. The thing that has always held the humor and the rock 'n' roll together so delectably with this band is THE BOOGIE, and this first single "Body Shot" has that in abundance! The drums and guitars are massive, and there's a smokin' reggae coda at the end! Do not attempt to stay still while listening!

Just A Mandarino Monday
Bill's recently made some really cool musical discoveries, so today's posts come courtesy of him!First off is Public Radio, a band out of Charlotte, North Carolina who've recently released their debut EP entitled Sweetchild. Led by singer/songwriter Mark Mathis, this four-piece manages to combine emo, electronic and good old rock 'n' roll influences into one compelling and potent mixture. They're being heavily compared to Death Cab For Cutie, but there's a certain aggressiveness to Public Radio that adds a bolder dimension to the songs. "17 Is Too Young," is about a young man having to go to war but wishing he was able to finish growing up normally without having to leave his girlfriend and go kill people. But don't expect to hear misery rock, the tune is melodic, anthemic and totally rocking!
http://www.zshare.net/audio/67501471f5b6fcdf/

Playing a raucous version of pub rock that you can already tell will be reaching the backs of stadiums in the near future are Bristol, England's The Chemists. They're releasing their debut album The Theories of Dr. Lovelock in early November, and have preceded it with the single "Milk and Honey," which we're totally excited to share with you here. "You've got it all, why would you want more?" wails singer Johnny Benn, while the band pounds along behind him, wearing their Pixies and Queens of the Stone Age influences proudly on their madly strumming and drumming sleeves. This is one band that needs to be heard LOUD!!!

New Dynamo

From the ashes of New Order's 2007 split rises Bad Lieutenant, with their debut Never Cry Another Tear. The band is made up of N.O. founding members vocalist/guitarist Bernard Sumner and drummer Stephen Morris, who are joined by recent N.O. touring guitarist Phil Cunningham, ex-Blur bassist Alex James and guitarist Jake Evans. Their sound distances itself from New Order's danciness and heads in a more rock direction with an emphasis on guitars. "Dynamo" takes the classic Who "Won't Get Fooled Again" synth sample and throws it to the back of the mix where it sounds almost church-organ-ish, and it fits there quite nicely. The original elements of the song recall the best parts of U2 and Snow Patrol. Nicely done!

Glimmers of Hope

The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi is the title of the debut album by Belgian disco enthusiasts The Glimmers. Although they've been making noise for a number of years, this is their first true album of original music. They have enlisted some notable names, such as Princess Superstar and Prins Thomas, to add to the studio magic, and it works well. Although this LCD Soundsystem-esque remake of Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" has been floating around the internet for awhile, it seems like the obvious choice to post, it's just so much fun!

That Same Fagget!

We got some lesbos again, this time a Danish duo calling themselves Fagget Fairys, thereby covering ALL the important homosexual demographics. Smart, right? Anyway, they make some pretty sick beats and tracks, as it turns out, so who cares about the details? Brooklyn-based producer/DJ AC Slater has added his tough dancefloor thrills with just the right amount of wonkiness and Marine Corps brass to "Samo Ti," and there you have a completely undeniable booty-shaker, so TURN IT UP!!

Purple Fu

Super hot Brooklyn beatmaker Chew Fu and Australian singer Steve Clisby have teamed up for a fantastic cover of Prince's "Purple Rain." Clisby stays true to the original melody, but it's the sound of his voice that re-energizes the track you've heard so many times before. Smooth and sultry, like a cross between Isaac Hayes and Tom Jones, his voice is a remarkable instrument. For his part, Chew Fu has completely thrown out the old formula and re-invented the song with some jazzy piano, a popping Bootsy-worthy bassline and a nice and tight drum track. Now come lay down in the funk, chillrens!

Well Hello, Mr. Soul

Rove Dogs is a French dude who does dubby edits of some less-than-obvious tunes by classic rock artists like The Eagles and, in this instance, Neil Young. In "Miss Boogie," he takes Neil's 1983 electronic re-imagining of his classic Buffalo Springfield tune "Mr. Soul" and boils it down to a percolating disco-boogie that drips from the speakers like some chunky lava.

Feel Like A Kid Again

Having already appeared on tracks with the likes of Lil Wayne & Just Jack, the UK's 18 year-old Kid Rad is very quickly making a name for himself. He's been working on his debut album Disturbing The Sequence since 2007 and is getting it ready for release in early 2010. From the sound of this track, "Over Again," it will have been well worth the wait. Incorporating elements of hip-hop, house, grime & drum'n'bass into one monster of a style, and with a killer remix by Creme Prulee, you're sure to be jumping around your room when you crank this joint up!

New Yorke

"You can do no wrong, in my eyes..." sings Thom Yorke on "Hearing Damage." Plenty of Radiohead fans feel just this way about Thom, and I am one of them. That admittance aside, this new track from the Twilight: New Moon Soundtrack is actually my favorite of his recently released tunes. I love how he challenges you with his tracks, but this one eases up a bit and just lays there softly throbbing for your pleasure. It sounds like something Radiohead might have done in between OK Computer and Kid A, and that is a f-i-n-e way to sound, indeed!

Hockey Shoes

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Hockey have recently released their debut album Mind Chaos on Capitol Records. Much like Kentucky's Cage The Elephant, they initially stirred up more interest across the pond than at home. Fortunately, they also seem to be following CTE's lead by using that as a building block and bringing the momentum back here to America. "Too Fake" was their first release earlier this year, and seems to be re-gaining exposure even though they've released a couple of singles since. The Joe & Will Ask? remix appeared on the latest Updog mix Subterrania, but this remix by The Shoes is super-groovy as well!

Heavy Heroes

The Heavy are a four-piece out of the UK who've just released their sophomore effort, The House That Dirt Built, and it is a stunner. Every single song evokes some classic soul shaker; Some Curtis Mayfield here, some Marvin Gaye there, a little Jimi Hendrix over on the side... Not to say that they sound stuck in the past. Like Gnarls Barkley, The Heavy are re-fitting soul for modern times. THTDB is, however, a more cohesive sounding album than Gnarls have managed to put together as of yet, and that is indeed high praise. Here's the gorgeously mournful tune "Short Change Hero."

Sometimes Invisible

If dreamy dance-pop is your kinda thing, then The Invisible Kid needs to be on your radar. His second album The Entrance came out earlier this year and he's about to release the best song on it, "Sometimes," as the next single. Hailing from New York but also exhibiting a distinct British vibe, he's definitely at the forefront of the whole 80's new wave resurgence of late. He's also done some great remixes of recently buzzed about acts like Friendly Fires and The Helio Sequence, so expect to hear a lot more from him.

Mmmmmmm... Marrow!

Oklahoma-born Annie Clark, who goes by the nom-de-plume St. Vincent, released her second album Actor earlier this year on 4AD to almost unanimous critical acclaim. It was well-deserved, the album is an instant classic. She had already established herself as a bonafied upper crust indie musician by way of her stints in The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens band before releasing her first solo album under the St. Vincent name in 2007. The next single to be released is "Marrow," which recalls PJ Harvey, Bjork & Peaches while still sounding completely unique and fresh.

Dark Whigs

The latest "Sons of Athens," three-piece power-punk-poppers The Whigs are finally set to release their follow-up to 2008's Mission Control. They've been steadily raising their profile over the past couple years, joining kindred southern spirits like the Drive-By Truckers and Kings of Leon on national tours. The new album is expected sometime right around the turn of 2010 and is to be entitled In The Dark. Here's the title track, which they've released for free download. Not that that matters here, we give you ALL the good shit free at Three Queens! Enjoy!

Jackin' Black

UK trio Black Noise are about to release their second EP creatively titled EP2 (yes, the previous one was called EP1). It features the rhymin' stylee of New York MC Lex One over top of a track called "Jackin' My Fresh" that's a little bit electro, a little bit breakbeat, a little bit wonky, and a whole lotta HAWT!! Crank it up and piss off the neighbors like I did!

Monster Violence!!!

Baby Monster are two dudes from Oregon, Danny Sternbaum & Marty Larson. Danny has been making a name for himself in the production field, having worked on the soundtrack of Repo, The Genetic Opera and supposedly being short-listed to work on what would have been the next Michael Jackson album. The pair's first release is a dark & trippy pop masterpiece, imagine a collaboration between Mika and Goldfrapp with production by Satan himself. The tune is called "Ultra Violence and Beethoven" and comes out on London label 50 Bones, which has already made a mark by releasing debut singles by the likes of Little Boots and The Virgins.

Mr. T.'s Machine

Kings & Queens is the title of the recently released 2nd album by brit-hop singer/songwriter Jamie T. There were a lot of expectations for the follow-up to his debut album Panic Prevention, which was nominated for Britain's esteemed Mercury Prize (The Klaxons took home the award). Fortunately, the new album delivers, managing to be both fun and thought-provoking at the same time. As with similar young British acts such as Arctic Monkeys and The Streets, the lyrics make a lot more sense if you're actually from England. However, with such hook-laden tunes as these, it really doesn't matter where you're from, you're gonna jump in and sing along regardless. Here's the upcoming third single, "The Man's Machine."

Lesbian Sainthood

Canadian carpet-munching twin sisters Tegan and Sara are gearing up to release their sixth studio album, Sainthood. The album features the first songs released that were co-written by the pair, who have famously always written separately. Similarly, in an effort to broaden their appeal further, they combined the producers of their two prior albums, Chris Walla and Howard Redekopp, to flesh out the most accessible sound possible. The first single is the rocking sing-along anthem "Hell."

Sweet & White & Highly Refined

Grammy-winning duo Flight of the Conchords are back with a new album on SubPop, and of course it had to be called I Told You I Was Freaky! The tunes about leggy blondes, robots and Bowie on their self-titled 2008 album also just happened to be as catchy and well-produced as they were hilarious, and Freaky continues the trend. Most of the songs are already classics to fans of their HBO show, such as "You Don't Have to be a Prostitute", "Too Many Dicks (On the Dance Floor)" and this here gem, "Sugalumps."

Calvin's Flashback

Calvin Harris made a big splash with his first album I Created Disco and has continued to win new fans with his sophomore effort Ready For The Weekend. The album has already produced two number one singles in the UK, and the title track recently made it to number three there. In addition to his own success, he has been hand-picked by artists such as Kylie Minogue and Shakira to help with production and remixing. The soon-to-be-released fourth single "Flashback" could be the most impressive release from Ready yet, with it's sultry disco vibe and hook-y chorus.

Casablancas' Phrazes

Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas is releasing his first solo effort at the top of November. Entitled Phrazes for the Young, it promises to stretch out with a little bit more of an electronic edge than The Strokes, while still retaining the sturdy songwriting and arranging that we've come to expect from his work in his 'regular' gig. The album was produced by Jason Lader, who's credits include production for Rilo Kiley and playing with The Mars Volta, with additional help from Mike Mogis, of Bright Eyes & Monsters of Folk fame. Here's the first single "11th Dimension" along with a movie theater-worthy trailer for the album that Bill's been digging...

Bambam & Updog recommend Erik Hassle

20 year old Swedish pop singer Erik Hassle is poised to begin a great career. He's got a great voice, great songs, and looks... well, okay, he's kinda just an average looking ginger kid with a bush of hair on his head. But again, let's focus on the positive. His voice is both accessible and transcendent, which is a nice combination for both the critics AND the people. Similar to the talent of Daniel Merriweather, but with his own poppier vibe going on, "Don't Bring Flowers (After I'm Dead)" is a great introduction to this promising new talent.

In addition, here's an introduction to how well Erik lends himself to a great remix, particularly this one by Martin Roth via Youtube...

Who's Your Daddy?

Weezer's new album Raditude comes out on November 3rd, and from the sound of the first single "(If You're Wondering If I Want You to) I Want You To" and this second single, "I'm Your Daddy", Rivers & Co. are shamelessly aiming straight for the Top 40. They worked with pop big-hitters like Jermaine Dupree, Atlanta's own Butch Walker and on "Daddy," Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears). In other words, they've totally "sold out," which really only means that 15-year old girls and housewives will be singing along with them just like YOU will be!

Har Mar Superstar "Tall Boy"
Har Mar Superstar is back with a new album, Dark Touches, which was released on October 13th. The first single "Tall Boy" is as catchy a tune as you've heard in a while, and was co-written with Greg Kurstin of The Bird And The Bee. The video has some high-profile celebs, Eva Mendes among them! Along with a few recent acting gigs (he plays a coach in the recently released Drew Barrymore-directed movie Whip It), his public image may take a few big steps up... so be the first queen on your block to rock this track!

There is just no way to explain this video clip, which is why we love it so here at TQ HQ! If you haven't seen it before, all that we can tell you is that you will either love it or hate it, there is absolutely no in-between! Our personal favorite line? Updog Recommends...

She Wants Revenge have a recently released EP entitled Up & Down. It is a marked step away from their previous releases, minimizing the goth and darkwave elements and jacking up the sexiness that was always underlying their best tracks. ZinaStar, a new discovery signed to SWR's label, adds a tasty pop sheen to "All Wound Up"s already accessible funkiness. A hot jam for the dancefloor, the back alley or the bedroom! Pick up the whole EP at Amazon or iTunes.

Bambam Recommends...

Bambam wants you to know that the 80's are back in a big way. Hair, fashion and fabulous gay anthems! Here's a totally marvy new remix by Wayne G & Andy Allder of the Erasure classic, "A Little Respect." Now slick back that spiky mullet/pompadour hybrid and get your acid-washed booty to the dancefloor!

Jared Leto and her ladies are back with the first release from their upcoming album This Is War. The tune is called "Kings & Queens" and I'm quite certain that it's a loving nod to our new blog here... it's a typically majestic track, so check it on out, dolly!
